But there is one little problem. You can’t open them.
You need some knobs or pulls to make them function. Problem is you are terrified. You have to actually drill holes right through those brand new doors in order to install those stunning new knobs that you so painstakingly selected.
But what if you make a mistake? I have a trick. I learned this one from my Dad and he knows ’bout this kinda stuff. He is the one who taught us how to install cabinet knobs with a template. So if you are worried about DIYing this, just relax. This easy trick will have those cabinets ready to open in no time. Selecting the cabinets was the easy part.
Template For Drilling Door Handle Tool
I’ve known since I was about six months old that I wanted white shaker in a painted maple finish. That decision was no problem. Choosing the knobs and pulls was much harder. After hours and months and weeks and years and decades of pouring over all my options I finally settled on these beauties from. I couldn’t be happier with them For the drawers I selected these gorgeous in a Matte Satin Nickel finish.
I have always been a big fan of cup pulls. In fact, we have never had a kitchen where I didn’t choose cup pulls for the drawers. I even added new cup pulls to the kitchen and bathroom cabinets in our rental house.
And these cups pulls are the nicest ones I have ever had. They have such a solid feel and I love the detail of the faux screw head on each end. I feel like I could be in a Hamptons kitchen somewhere with these beauties like, maybe even at Martha’s. What do you think? I’m equally in love with the knobs.
The doors are dressed with these stunning in a Brushed Satin Nickel finish. I feel like they are the perfect little piece of jewelry added to the kitchen and add just the right amount of sparkle and bling while maintaining a cottagey vintage feel to the overall space. They, too, have such a solid quality feel and I couldn’t be more thrilled with them. Now for the installation!
The trick is to figure out where exactly you want your knobs and handles placed and then to build a template so that you can easily mark where to drill on all of your drawers and doors without measuring and remeasuring and marking and remarking again and again each time. Here is what we started with We used: – the hardware (knobs and pulls shown above) – and correct sized drill bit for our specific hardware – a wooden template for the doors and another one for the drawers – (the pointed tool that we used to mark the doors through the template- you could also use a tiny pencil or pen) To create the template. Start by determining where exactly you want your knobs to sit. Cut a small piece of thin wood, or even a piece of cardboard or cardstock would work. The edges of the square you cut will line up with the edges of the cabinet doors. We taped our template to another flat piece of wood to make it a little easier to hold still on the door while we marked the spot When done, you can see the little mark created by the poking through the predesignated hole with the awl Next, just drill where you marked being sure to use the correct size drill bit (match it to the size of your specific knobs or cabinet hardware). Then screw them on!
It’s so easy that you don’t even have to change out of your PJ pants. Our specific knobs came with snap off screws. We needed to determine the length that we wanted them to be based on the thickness of our specific cabinet doors. The hubs used two sets of pliers to wiggle and snap the screws off at the correct point For the cabinet pulls we used the same kind of method. We created a template with holes predrilled at the correct width to match our cup pulls.
The only difference was that we also needed to draw a line indicated the center point on our template, and then to measure and find the center of our drawers (the little T marks center on our template). We decided to install all the drawer pulls at the same distance down from the top of the shaker box, rather then centered directly in the middle (height wise) of the drawer. You can see how this looks below, both when drilled and then once the pulls were installed: Done! We have functional cabinets that actually open and close thanks to the beautiful new hardware. I love the pulls and knobs. What do you think??

Krista, I just ordered these exact same Top knob TK128BSN Crystal knobs for my new laundry room. I found you because I could not figure out why there is an extension on this knob and how you drill the hole?
Did your knobs have 1/2″ extension on the end? Also how did you mount them flush with you cabinet in that case? I called Top Knobs today and they said people like them to have the extension on them. Anything you can tell me will help before I return them. I love the look but do want them to be mounted flush. PS your kitchen is beautiful!

All outer door handles have smooth surfaces, protecting and safeguarding the fixing bolts. These fixing bolts are typically fixed from the inside of the property. The Door Handle Drill Template is a very clever yet simple device to to locate approximately where the fixing bolt holes are.
How to Use If the door handle is a short back plate then it will have 2 fixing points. One is under the lever and the other is near the bottom of the door handle. For the bolt near the bottom of the door handle you will need to hold the curved part of the template over the backplate and then mark a hole where the V groove is, and then use HSS drill bits and drill a 4mm or 5mm hole. You should then be able to see all or part of the fixing bolt. If not, then use a large drill; say an 8mm; until you eventually see the fixing bolt.
If you then place a drill on the bolt it will either drill out or more likely unthread itself. Then turn over the door handle drill point template so that the curved part is facing outwards you and then put over the lever and let it hang down from the lever. Again, make a mark at the V and once again drill out the bolt. The door handle should now lever off easily.
On long door handle backplates there are normally 2 drill points-one at the top, and one at the bottom. So use the handle drill point template exactly as shown above. On rarer door locks you may come across 3 bolts, with the third being under the lever as with the short backplate door handle. The new High Security Door Handles can mostly be tackled in precisely the same way, but this could take a minute or two longer to carefully drill out the drill points.
