I have a WNA1100 USB card with me, and I've been trying to get it to work with two of my desktops, both custom machines. One has 4GB RAM and a dual core 64-bit processor, and the other has 3GB RAM with a dual core 32-bit processor. However, on both of the computers I get a blue screen of death whenever I try to connect to a network. I tried both using the D-Link utility and Windows Zero Config, and neither works.
The strange part is that the dongle worked fine with the Developer Preview, just not the Consumer Preview. I don't exactly remember what the BSoD said, as I am now using other adapters on those computers.
I have the same adapter got a blue screen. I got it working in Consumer Preview using these steps. If you have the drivers, find the setup.exe file to install the drivers. I used the one in the DRIVER ONLY folder.
If this works with the regular setup file I have no idea. Right click on the setup.exe file and click properties. Then click the Compatibility tab. Then select Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows 7. Select Windows 7 from the drop down list. Then go down to Privilege Level and pick run this program as administrator. Then click OK.
After setting the compatibility mode, just to be sure, don't run the setup.exe file directly. Right click on it, and pick Run as Administrator again. Install the driver and you should be able to connect. If this does not work, I am sorry, and please note that NETGEAR does not support WNA1100 in Consumer Preview. If this does not work, I am sorry, and please note that NETGEAR does not support WNA1100 in Consumer Preview. I had the same problem but seem to have found a better solution but before trying to install the driver from the setup disk. Perform the same process as above but do this to the autorun file found within the setup disk.
(right click on the autorun file and select properties/ then click on the compatibility tab/ Then select Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows 7. Select Windows 7 from the drop down list. Then go down to Privilege Level and pick run this program as administrator.) This seems to install the whole setup procedure in windows 7 rather than windows 8 consumer preview.
It's better if you have a CD drive and the CD or a full ISO. But if you are using it as a replacement on a netbook or tablet you might not have a CD drive to work with. So, if they downloaded the drivers from the net, installed the drivers from an external backup, or installed off USB flash then they might not have the autorun file to work with.
All they might have is the driver file. The setup file method works either way so I went that route so I didn't have to make guesses about where the drivers came from. This solves the problem and you wont get a BSoD once you connect to your network. I also had to change the security settings to WPA/TKIP to be able to get internet access. My internet is up and running now, only problem is this screen popping up saying 'insert the wireless usb adapter into your computer' every 10 seconds. I found out that it was a Tool64.exe and I just went ahead and deleted that file. PROBLEM SOLVED!!!
